Tourist Information

The municipality of Šempeter-Vrtojba offers a wide variety of pursuits for active holidaymakers all year round. As a matter of fact the choice of recreation and outings is so vast that even the most active tourists will not be able to take advantage of them all.

The two settlements - Šempeter pri Gorici and Vrtojba, which make make up the municipality of Šempeter-Vrtojba, are situated where the Vrtojba-Bilje knolls meet the fertile plain. These have been formed over time by the deposits from the rivers Soča and Vipava.

The area has been inhabited since the Roman times. In the past, both settlements supplied Gorica with vegetables and other farm produce. Today, they are developing into a modern economic and commercial centre.

Green woodlands, vineyards, fields and meadows lend an air of a richly colourful scene. The Vrtojba-Bilje knolls, along with a large part of the surrounding plain offer the best conditions for viticulture, fruit farming, horticulture, greengrocery and floristry. Hence, the area is also known as “The Garden of the Goriška Region”.

For the Body

Both settlements offer relaxation and entertainment. Travellers can find board in Hotel Lipa, in the Šanpier restaurant and the students house. Typical local specialities are polenta (cornmeal mush), various minestrones – e.g. Šelinka- made from celery, different frtalja (omelettes), Easter fulja (potato gnocchi rolls) and other tasty dishes. Also during the last weekend in September, the border municipalities in the Goriška Region co-organise the reputable culinary event – “Gusti di frontiera” (“Tastes across the borders”) in Gorizia (Italy).

Athletics, various ball sports as well as other recreational and sports activities take place throughout the year at the Sport Centre and in the Ivan Rob Primary School gym in Šempeter (Osnovna šola Ivana Roba). There you can also find a large outdoor, albeit covered, climbing wall that is suitable for even the more experienced climbers. And last but not least there is an archery range situated near Šempeter railway station that archers can use during summer, football and mountain bike lovers can test their skills at Šempeter Sports park.

There are two viewpoints which offer wonderful views of the local surrounding area. One is St. Mark (227m.a.s.l), which looks out across Šempeter pri Gorici and the other is St. Ot (112 m.a.s.l), which rises above the wooded Vrtojba-Bilje knolls. In addition, both offer excellent opportunities for light active-relaxation activities. This is especially catered for not only on the woodland trail in Vrtojba, where trim trails (a series of exercise stations with wooden apparatus) offer an extra outdoor workout, but also on the circular trail for hikers and mountain bikers.

Through the territory of the Municipality Šempeter-Vrtojba also takes place The Walk of Peace, which from the Alps to the Adriatic connects the rich cultural and natural heritage along the onetime Isonzo Front and belongs to important European heritage of historical interest. The areas of Goriška and the Kras of Goriška with their numerous military cemeteries, caves, monuments and other memorials are its central part.

For the Soul

Šempeter pri Gorici and Vrtojba both offer their visitors exciting social experiences. Numerous societies and groups take pride in their rich traditions and acclaimed quality and attract a great number of visitors year after year. Throughout the year, choirs; cultural-artistic groups; sports and a variety of other societies organise many shows, concerts and other events.

Excellent starting point

The municipality of Šempeter-Vrtojba is an excellent starting point for trips to local as well as more remote surroundings because in its close proximity, there are numerous sports and other facilities where you can spend your holidays actively. You can play golf or go cycling, paragliding, bungee jumping, kayaking, canoeing, rafting, hiking, bowling, fishing, hunting, etc.

It takes just half an hour from here to reach not only the sea but also the mountains. Numerous interesting sights, including exceptional historic, cultural and technical heritage, tempt one to visit them:

  • The Kostanjevica Franciscan Monastery above Nova Gorica, is where the tombs of the last members of the Bourbon dynasty (the French royal family) can be found. Interred here among them is the last French king Charles X . Also worth a look is Padre Stanislav Škrabec's Library with over 10,000 volumes in various languages as well as the assortment of Bourbon roses from the 19th century, that flower in May and June. This collection is the second biggest of its kind in Europe.
  • The Solkan Railway Bridge is considered the last of the great stone bridges, and with its 85 metre span is also the largest in the world.
  • The Basilica of the Assumption on Sveta Gora is an important sacred place with a rich tradition of pilgrimage, offering visitors one of the most beautiful vistas in Slovenia.
  • Due to its strategic position above Soča this mount Sabotin was an important Austro-Hungarian bridgeheat during the Izonso front. The mountain is crisscrossed with system of trenches and caves wich were built by the two armies, the Austro-Hungarian and the Italian, to fortify their positions. Mt. Sabotin is a splendid vantage point and offers a view over the hills of Sveta Gora and Škabrijel, the Vipava Vallery, the Kras, the Friuli lowlands, the Goriška brda area and the Julian Alps.
  • The valley of the emerald green Soča River.
  • The Goriska brda Hills invite you among their vineyard covered knolls.
  • The Vipava Valley, which is not only full of wine-growing hillsides, but also boasts many manors and castles. Above the valley para-gliders and hang-gliders from all over the world spread their wings and enjoy the views.
